THE TRANSFORMATION

Our visitor centre was originally the manager's office at the distillery. As the site has grown and a little more computerisation has hit the site, so the space for storage has been reduced and we found ourselves with most of the building sitting silently.

We have had a lot of requests to visit the site, and decided to convert this space for a reception area at the heart of the distillery site.

The ravages of a particularly cold winter, and a few burst pipes had damaged some of the rooms, floors and ceilings but gave a blank sheet for us to work with.

We have worked closely with Paul Hodgkiss a former Balvenie Artisan Award winner to design features for the centre. Paul still works with traditional materials to create, truly unique pieces that celebrate the natural detail of the wood, these are enhanced by hand made metalwork. The rooms have been restored to their former glory, traditionally wood lined and decorated with shots of the distillery's past, there's no whizzy TV multimedia presentation here, everything about our history will be conveyed by the tour manager ~ we just find it a little more personal that way.
